The Legendary Anime Concludes a 27-Year Era in 2026

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for long-running series, with Toei Animation announcing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Starting in the new year, after the current storyline wraps up, the anime will go on a three-month break until April, when the next major arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, One Piece will produce two seasons every year for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the universe — including more material, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime had a half-year pause that started in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the visuals and allow the comic to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to supply viewers with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although some recap episodes appeared during this season, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may lead to one episode of the series covering one chapter, with others instead covering more material or additional to make up for scheduling.

It's the end of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of production, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course itself have numerous side stories, and the standard of the art can vary widely between installments and the next. Nowadays, anime production is organized in seasons, with a couple at most releasing each year, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the original work.
