Social Media Influencers Fueling Parallel Trade for Unapproved Slimming Drug

A shadow market for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and sellers on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.

Investigational Treatment Gaining Popularity Via Social Media

Retatrutide, which remains in research studies, is being advertised by social media influencers for its supposed fat-burning effects. Followers are encouraged to message these accounts privately for supplier links, while also receiving promotional offers.

Active Commerce on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share comparison photos, injection guides and claims of next-day British shipping. Sellers promote the drug there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for transactions.

Understanding The Experimental Drug

This medication is an experimental injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could help patients lose up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Medical Experts Voice Worries

However, physicians and pharmacists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in individuals administering substances of unknown origin.

Several professionals said the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing cost of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Legal Position and Implementation

Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that must not be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.

Some content creators attempt to sidestep the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but promotion and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, marketing, and customer regulations, risking penalties, prosecution or imprisonment.

Platform Reaction and Content Removal

According to TikTok, the service has removed violative content and prohibited associated hashtags and query recommendations. The company stated it was dedicated to keeping the service secure and investing in strengthening enforcement strategies.

Digital Trading Activities

Research also found groups with up to nine thousand participants selling retatrutide using Telegram's integrated search feature, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays channels with thousands of members, filled with photos of slimming results, glowing reviews and step-by-step instructions for mixing or administering at home.

Within minutes of entering one group, a seller shared contact information, where most purchases occur. The vendor provided an guidebook and promised delivery within two days. When asked whether the substance was genuine, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a alleged testing documentation. Not one inquired about body mass, medical conditions or past usage.

Product Information and Costs

Inside these groups, messages show dark colored parcels with postal service stickers, claiming to include new batches. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between powder vials, mixed at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors typically priced at £160 for 20 milligrams. When questioned how long a pen should be used, vendors give conflicting responses ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Safety Actions

A spokesperson for the messaging service said it actively monitored harmful material on its service including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Cautions

“Individuals are administering substances they can’t verify. Although the science behind this drug is valid, these online versions may not contain what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the increase in interest to current cost increases for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit treatments are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were produced in was sterile,” she said.

Her team has previously encountered patients injured by personal administration from unconfirmed suppliers. “We recognize the frustration, but buying from messaging apps or WhatsApp is taking chances with your well-being,” stated the doctor. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Producer Statement

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or approved by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for human use,” they said, noting that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a company experimental substance not yet authorized … may expose users to potentially significant health risks”.
